Going Green
Whether they are driving a hybrid or using reusable grocery bags, these days it seems like nearly everyone is “going green” in some way. One local couple has made going green simple. Stephanie and Brian Cates started Simply Green Recycling Service a few years ago to help their community become more environmental friendly. Simply Green offers curbside service in Morganton for residents and local businesses, so no more hauling your recyclables in your vehicle to a recycling center. The couple, along with a little extra help from family, picks up your recycling materials twice a month. They will even provide you with recycling blue bins to put your cans, glass bottles and paper materials.
Get Your Recycle On
The only thing you have to do is collect your recyclables throughout the week and make sure you’ve divided into the appropriate blue bins. The Simply Green Web site, www.simplygreenrecycyling.com, says to put all cans – aluminum and steel – and plastics 1 and 2, this includes detergent bottles, soap and shampoo bottles, milk, juice and drink bottles in the bin without the lid. Make sure to flatten all plastic bottles and remove any lids. You can also put glass bottles and jars, of any color, in the same bin. Again, just remember to remove all lids. The blue bin with the lid is for your paper products, which includes newspaper, magazines, computer paper, shredded paper, junk mail you receive through the postal service, cereal boxes, toilet and paper towel rolls, soda or beer cartons, egg cartons (not Styrofoam) and corrugated cardboard (broken down flat). If the cardboard is too big for container place it underneath container on pick up day. Used pizza boxes cannot be recycled.
Pickup Schedule
The only thing you have left to do is make sure your blue bins are on the curb and ready for pick up on your schedule day. The Simply Green pickup schedule follows the same schedule as the City’s trash pickup, but pick up twice a month, instead of every week. Simply Green does pickup recycling outside of the city limits. Check the business’s website for pickup times.
Green Testimony
Anna Wilson, of Morganton, has used Simply Green Recycling for more than a year. She heard about the business after a friend from work told her about them.“I think it’s great,” she says. “They provide the containers and I don’t have to do any kind of seperating except for paper. Those containers keep everything clean and simple.” Wilson, who pays Simply Green six months at a time, said she used to recycle years ago – cans only – but stopped. “Before my car was like a garbage barge,” she said. “The cans would leak and my car would really start to stink. Just being a single person it is surprising how much garbage I produced that is recyclable. They make it easy and to me six dollars isn’t that much to pay. I like supporting local business people and going green. ”
