Excellent public schools are available in nearby Morganton, which is also home to the Western Piedmont Community College, the North Carolina School for the Deaf and Western Carolina Rehabilitation Center. In nearby Marion, McDowell Technical Community College offers associate degrees, diplomas, and/or certificates in more than 30 programs, as well as a variety of continuing education classes.
Morganton is also the base for the American Adventure Service Corps, a unique program that addresses the needs of young people using the theme of outdoor adventure and service to others. It serves boys and girls, ages 8 to 18.
Not far way in Boone is Appalachian State University, consistently ranked among the most respected and acclaimed comprehensive universities in the south.
