Straddling the McDowell and Burke County line, tucked in the rolling hills at the base of Linville Gorge in the beautiful foothills of western North Carolina, Lake James is conveniently located near the towns of Marion and Morganton. Just 35 minutes east of Asheville, North Carolina, only 40 minutes west of Hickory, North Carolina, and about a 90-minute drive from Charlotte, it’s easily accessible via Interstate 40.
Major airports are available in Asheville and in Charlotte (Charlotte International Airport). The Rutherford Airport, just 20 minutes away, serves small jets and other general aviation aircraft.
Just make your way to I-40 and follow our directions. Whether you’re coming from the east or the west, the way here is filled with spectacular scenery and many opportunities to pause and explore.
From I-40, Exit 105
- From I-40, take exit 105 and go north on Highway 18 through downtown Morganton.
- Stay straight through town as Highway 18 turns into Highway 181 north.
- After you pass through all of the commercial areas, go another 2 to 2.5 miles to a traffic light at Oak Hill Elementary School. Take a left at this light and then a quick right on Frank Whisnant Road.
- Follow Frank Whisnant Road about 2.5 miles to a stop sign. Bear right on Highway 126 and our office will be 0.9 miles ahead on the left.
- As you come around the corner, look for a big barn on the hill. The office is a two-story building with burgundy shake siding and a rusty metal roof, number 3053 on Highway 126.

From I-40, Exit 100
- From I-40, take exit 100 and go east on Jamestown Road.
- Stay straight for 2.8 miles.
- Turn left at the traffic light onto Highway 126. Freedom High School will be on your left at this light.
- Travel 6.2 miles on Highway 126 and you will see the Lake James Real Estate office on your left.
- As you come around the corner, look for a big barn on the hill. The office is a two-story building with burgundy shake siding and a rusty metal roof, number 3053 on Highway 126.

From I-40, Exit 94
- Take I-40 East to exit 94 for Dysartsville Road.
- Once you exit, turn left and cross back over the highway. Follow this road until it ends in a T-intersection at Highway 70.
- Turn left on Highway 70 and follow it 1.5 miles to Bridgewater Road on the right.
- Bridgewater Road will turn into Powerhouse Road as you travel east. Cross over two dams and the spillway for Lake James.
- Continue a few miles after the last dam to another T-intersection at Highway 126. There will be a convenience store on your left and a restaurant on the right.
- Take a right on 126 and our office will be about 1/4 of a mile on the right.
